Danish Paper Bindings

There are four types of Danish Paper Bindings: Paper; Sandgren style; Rubow and Millimeter.  Collectively they are NOT called “millimeter bindings.” A short history of these bindings can be found in an article I wrote by clicking here.

Click on the binding names below for more information, and photographs, of these bindings.

The four types of Danish Paper Bindings

Paper bindings are completely covered in paper over hard covers (i.e. they are not limp bindings).

Sandgren style bindings were invented by August Sandgren, a Danish binder who opened his own bindery in 1920.

Rubow bindings were first made in 1940 by Henrik Park.

Millimeter bindings were first made in 1941 by Henrik Park. They are the only one of the four which resulted from wartime shortages.

Information and examples of the paper used to cover these books

Paste Paper is created by manipulating color that has been put in a carrier (like paste, maybe?). It’s sort of like finger painting for adults.

Decorated papers are printed papers bookbinders would most likely buy to use as covers, though some printed their own.

Salto paper, from Axel Salto, have been prominent since his first collaboration with August Sandgren.
