P and S Engraving
Portslade, England
P and S Engraving is named for the two men who founded the company in 1980, Roy Pettit and Brian Skilton. Their web site says, “We were among the last apprentices to learn the skills of relief engraving from some of the fine hand engravers who had worked in the trade since the 1920's.”
Clearly they learned well. As you can see below, their work is very labor intensive and requires an enormous amount of skill and talent. The tools they create are beautiful, and a delight to use. Roy and Brian are extremely responsive to the needs of binders and are always ready to make a new design or tool. Many of the items in their catalog originated in requests from binders and conservators.
And they are wonderful guys as well. I’ve been lucky enough to have dinner with them at Standards and very much enjoyed my time with them. Though it certainly isn’t a surprise that folks doing this kind of work would be such interesting and nice people.
